Why Youth in New Mexico Should Support Governor Johnson

My generation is yearning for an honest voice with integrity to re-exert itself in the halls of Washington D.C. That voice can be Gary Johnson. Governor Johnson is a candidate who is unmatched in his independent, open thinking; something that is desperately needed in today’s political arena along with his record in reforming a highly divided and dysfunctional New Mexico government, something our U.S. Senate desperately needs especially today in Washington D.C. Since the LBJ administration, the two-party system  has strangled and corrupted all levels of government, inflicting incredible damage to the integrity, process and public faith in United States political system.

The fruits of this duopoly have lead to a political system where many Americans feel disenfranchised by their government, a body that consistently fails at fixing the problems facing our country like the ever-growing twenty-one trillion-dollar debt, endless wars for finite resources, cronyism, and a highly dysfunctional executive branch. Today’s Congress and American politics seem to only be filled with hyper-partisan rhetoric and outrage culture while having no value for accountability and real long-term solutions to the problems our generation, specifically, will inherit. The evidence of this broken federal government can be seen from a multitude of aspects. From the record low congressional approval rating to the massive amount of bloated spending, taxing, and regulation along with the legislative branch’s constant failure of passing even the most basic legislation to keep the government “functioning”, it is a clear that a breath of fresh air is desperately needed in Washington. Johnson and his campaign stand against this establishment narrative that has conditioned American people to believe that only Republicans and Democrats can hold major federal office in the modern political era.

Johnson’s campaign for Senate and his diverse group of supporters are revolting against everything wrong with the country’s current political status quo which is a direct result of the societal virus that is the forced political binary plaguing the United States. Some of the effects of the duopolies infection on our country’s politics including but not limited to propelling the United States into a perpetual dystopia of endless war, mass surveillance, and constant financial instability. Gary Johnson’s  Senate bid is a movement that encompasses and advances the idea that independent thought and belief will defeat the false paradigm that American politics has succumbed to for the last few generations. Both parties, perhaps unintentionally,  stand for the status quo of a Washington that looks for short-term temporary fixes that don’t actually lead to any resolving of the problems our Republic faces but rather looks to hide until it inevitably makes the problem worse. The one policy that is of great importance in this Senate race that best exemplified this crisis of conviction and consistency is the issue of immigration. Let’s start with Republican nominee Mick Rich who stands for the same broken and increasingly nativist immigration policies that President Trump supports which include lowering the number of legal immigrants allowed in the country, stricter immigration standards and continuing the tyrannical practice of mass deportation of non-criminal migrants and separation of families along with support for the idea of a wall across New Mexico southern border. Besides the fact that most of these policies will only end up hurting the American economy overall and that a wall won’t even stop the number one way illegal immigration happens in this country (which is expired worker visas whose holders usually come to the United States on a plane) this strict immigration stance that the GOP has fully adopted since the rise of Trump is counterintuitive to the values of a small constitutional government that Republicans once supported.

Outside of the fact that the border wall is by far the largest proposed use of the autocratic and unconstitutional  practice of eminent domain, to the violations of hundreds of thousands of people’s civil liberties which are guaranteed to them in the Constitution (which says it applies to all people in the United States, not just citizens). Rich’s current immigration policies perfectly exemplify the two-faced persona that has become accustomed in American politics today when it comes to the so-called basic party principles they are intended to ideally represent as Republican or Democrat candidates.

This hypocrisy and lip service on values and beliefs that currently infects American politics is certainly not limited to the Republican nominee in this race. This problem is also blatantly apparent with Democratic nominee and incumbent Martin Heinrich’s stance (or lack off) on immigration as well. Senator Heinrich over the past few years has not missed an opportunity to be critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. While one can appreciate him for his current stance on this issue is critical that the public understand that this criticism and emphases in “defending” migrants and immigrants in the United States is nothing more than a hallow action of grandstanding and lip service to this state’s Hispanic community. Nothing exemplifies Senator Heinrich fickle “stance” on defending migrants than his silence and enablement of former President Obama harsh immigration policies that also separate non-criminal families, and also resulted in the Obama administration deporting more people than any Presidential administration before him. Governor Johnson is the only candidate in this Senate race that is actively advocating to honestly fix for good our broken and bureaucratic nightmare that is our immigration system. He is the only major candidate in this race that is truly committed to easing the path of citizenship and legal residency to law bidding undocumented people who are a net benefit in this country in many aspects. This is the only policy that will truly fix the countries immigration system from the current problems it enables and causes.

This is just one aspect in which Governor Johnson’s values that stand out among the other major candidates in this Senate race. It is also important to consider what appears to be an impending democratic insurgency in Congress, which could lead to a Senator Johnson becoming the most powerful member of the U.S. Senate. This is especially likely with his victory, which could result in neither of the major parties attaining a majority in the Senate and thus making the defector a tie-breaking vote on many issues. If you want New Mexico’s next Senator to have a powerful voice of honesty, integrity, and action along with the will to always stand for the noble principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that our Republic was founded on, then I implore you to support Governor Johnson in his campaign for the U.S. Senate.
